Deuteronomy 30:19-20: “ . . . I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days.” This passage is part of the renewal of the covenant that the Lord made with the people of Israel at Mount Horeb. This comes at the end of Moses life, part of his Departing Address to the people, just before the Song of Moses that is recorded in Deut. 32.
This passage is the Voice of God, pleading with the people to choose LIFE, not to be drawn away by false gods, idols of the other nations round about. The whole question of this passage, in fact the whole question of the Bible (both the Torah, the Law of Moses and the rest of the Old Testament as well as the New Testament) is What Will You Choose? Even more it’s WHO will you choose?
And what does this passage say is the answer to those questions? HOW do you choose Life? You choose God. And HOW do you choose God? You love Him, and obey Him, and cling to Him. For He Is Your Life. Just exactly like Jesus said, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the LIFE . . .” We choose God by loving Him with all our hearts and souls and strength and minds. And we love our children and our grandchildren MOST by teaching them this one message about how GOD IS YOUR LIFE.
