Matthew 10:16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as snakes and harmless [innocent and gentle] as doves.” In this passage, Jesus is talking to his twelve disciples. He tells them they will suffer persecution, but the reason they’re going is to be a testimony [for Jesus], particularly in the councils and the synagogues, before governors and kings. Some versions say “to be a testimony against them.” This is the beginning of the apostles “going out to preach the Gospel.” (At first it’s only to the people of Israel; but later, unto all the world.)
Some people think this was just for the apostles, or just for the Christians in the First Century. But I always think this passage is applicable to us, the Christians who are alive on the earth today. It is especially evident when you think of all the Christians in Asia and elsewhere, who are under persecution from Muslim, Communist and other totalitarian regimes. We really are like sheep among wolves; and we really must be as clever as snakes, and as gentle as doves, just in order to survive and continue to be witnesses for our Lord Jesus. Continue reading

BUTTING IN LINE.101815
So I have this real serious problem. I’m obsessed with people butting in line. As for pedestrian butting, it irritates me considerably when three or four people are waiting and the one who arrived last steps up out-of-order. Sometimes I just can’t resist the temptation to say something rude like, “Didn’t your momma teach you any manners? Those other people were here first.” You know, it’s just not right, it’s just not fair, it’s just not polite. I just can’t believe the gall of some people. What happened to courtesy?
Sometimes I almost wish that America would adopt the custom they have in Mexico for waiting in line. In a bus station late one night at least 200 people waiting to buy tickets, and ONE ticket window open, and everyone in a great big semicircle jostling and side-stepping, ducking and jiving, working their way to the front. What Do You Mean, PRACTICING Christian? 101715
Back on August 16, 2015, I wrote a post called “Making Disciples”. The last paragraph said, “Did you notice that I haven’t said anything about talking to these ‘friends’ about Jesus. After you develop a relationship with them, if you’re a practicing Christian, Jesus will just start flowing through you to them, and touching their hearts, whether you are trying to make disciples of them or not. ‘Course that brings up the question of what does ‘practicing’ mean? But that’s a question for another day.”
Well today is the day to discuss some of what ‘practicing’ means. Let’s see, you know practicing, as in ‘practicing’ attorney? I happen to be an attorney, and that’s a scary thought. When are they going to finish practicing and start ‘being’ one? Or practicing medicine. What’s the time line for rising to the level of actually DOING it? In those cases, sounds like practicing may be a cover for seldom knowing for sure what is exactly the right thing to do. Try something and see if it works. If not, try something else.
Practicing Christian shall be deemed to be “one who is a follower of Jesus”. Follower in the Bible is often translated disciple, or ‘one who is taught’ (student). Continue reading
YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND.100115
Been stressed lately. My main source of income dried up. Had way too much to do and not enough time to do it all. Not getting enough rest. Not enough exercise. Heck, I don’t even have time to talk to my one kid still at home. He’s too busy too. Long days and short nights. Need a little relief. What can I do?
Well, I can think a little about God. Max (Lucado) says, “When you’re down, think of all God has done.” Oswald (Chambers) says, “We think everything should be turned into useful teaching. In fact, it is to be turned into something better: character.” Charles (Stanley) says, “When you need help, thank God for all He’s done.” Alistair (Begg) says, “All God has done for us should be saved and remembered, to bring honor and glory to Him.” Wow!
And I can pray and tell God I love Him. I really do thank Him for things He’s done for me, both long ago and in the last few days. I’m thinking about how I could use a little relief; a little peace and quiet; a little rest. Continue reading
MAKING DISCIPLES. 081615
In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus says, “All power is given to Me in heaven and earth. So go into all the world and make disciples; baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; teaching them to do all the things I have commanded you. And know this, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” So what does it mean, “MAKE DISCIPLES”? There have been many books written on this very topic; and it would take a book to properly answer that question. The short answer is: 1] Tell others what is required to become a ‘disciple of Jesus’; and 2] Show them how to do it. ‘Disciple’ means, in Greek, ‘one who is taught’; also translated as ‘follower’. I usually think ‘one who is taught’ is one who is WILLING to be taught; and a ‘follower’ is one who is WILLING to follow.
Before we talk about what it MEANS to ‘make disciples’; we need to talk about what it does NOT mean. [1] It does not mean to preach the gospel and have people accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, even though that happens along the way; that is still just a step in making disciples. WHAT IF GOD IS LOOKING AT YOUR HEART? 081015
1 Samuel 16:7(b) “The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” NIV.
What does this mean, “The LORD looks at the heart”? Sounds like it means that the important things in life are going on inside us rather than on the outside. It’s similar to 2 Corinthians 4:18, where it says, “So we don’t pay attention to the things that are seen, but those that are unseen. Because the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” The things that are going on in our hearts are the God things; the spiritual things. They are the things that really matter, because they are going to be around FOREVER.
Have you noticed that even on a natural level, the “things of the heart” are much more important to all of us than the material, worldly, earthly possessions. The things that are important are those that touch our hearts.
So in this story, God sends Samuel to anoint one of Jesse’s sons to be king. Continue reading
GIVE. 080615
Luke 6:38 (NLT) “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Heard a story from back in the Middle Ages, about a farmer walking down the road with a sack of grain over his shoulder, going to market, when along comes a big fancy carriage and stops right beside him. The door opens, the steps fold down, and out comes the King. The King says to the farmer, “What do you have in your bag?” The farmer says, “Wheat.” Continue reading
WIDOW’S MITES.080515
Luke 21:1-4: Jesus looked up and saw some rich people putting their gifts to God into the Temple collection box. 2 Then he saw a poor widow put two small copper coins into the box. 3 He said, “This poor widow gave only two small coins. But the truth is, she gave more than all those rich people. 4 They have plenty, and they gave only what they did not need. This woman is very poor, but she gave all she had to live on.” ERV
Last Friday, we went to Newton, Texas, to have an “Oasis Weekend”. We had Vacation Bible School, we worked in the Food Pantry of Newton, we repaired houses for people who were too old or too broke to do it themselves. Friday night we had a party for all the kids in town, and on Saturday night we had a “drive-in movie” on the church lawn; Despicable Me 2. We slept and ate at the Servant United Methodist Church. (fka First UMC of Newton). The church is small, populated by mostly very old faithful people, and a few kids. Not much money. So every year for the last nine years, we’ve taken a bunch of teenagers (and some preteens) up there for a weekend in East Texas. Continue reading
NEED HELP? 072015
When I was about 50, I figured out God wants me to ‘make disciples’ for Jesus. What does it mean, ‘make disciples’? It means two things: [1] tell people what they need to do to have a personal relationship with God, and [2] teach them what they need to do to grow and develop as followers (disciples) of Jesus. I’m 66 now, and I’m starting to get number ‘2’ down. I’m really learning to teach people to “observe all things [Jesus] has commanded us.” Matthew 28:19-20. Sometimes we have a real ‘victory in Jesus’ in that area. PTL!
But I still struggle with number ‘1’. I never quite know what to say to start a conversation about God. Most of the time I ask questions like ‘Where are you from?’ or ‘What do you like to do?’ Pretty soon you stumble on something you have in common. Continue reading
WANT TO WALK ON WATER? 071715
Matt. 14:28-30. “And Peter answered [Jesus] and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
This is a great story! It has all the ingredients of a growing relationship with Jesus. Everybody knows that Jesus walked on water. There are three times in the Bible that mention Jesus “walking on water” or “walking on the sea”. Often people use this as ‘best evidence’ of Jesus deity, that He was able to walk on water, when no one else could. But this was Peter, just a common, ordinary human, like you and me. They didn’t wear pants in those days, but if they had, he would have put his pants on one leg at a time, just like you and me. Peter did a lot of good stuff in his time on the earth, but he also did some bad stuff, and occasionally some really stupid stuff. But Jesus chose him, and Jesus loved him. And Peter walked on water.
There had to be something going on in Peter’s heart (and imagination) for him to even think to say, “Lord, if it’s you, make me walk on the water.” Continue reading
