I’m pretty sure most people in America are not ready to let anyone, even Jesus, be the Lord of their lives. At least no one besides themselves. We’re all too focused on me. But God is constantly moving a person in that direction; to give up himself, to “deny himself; to take up his cross daily and follow Jesus.” (Luke 9:23) To “take up your cross” means this: “I am crucified (I died) with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me, and the life that I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20) Jesus said that verse in Luke to anyone who wanted to be His disciple (his student, his follower). If you give up yourself, surrender yourself, deny yourself, die to yourself, then you DO make Jesus the Lord of your life, because He comes in to your own heart and body and fills you with His Own Spirit, and He BECOMES the Lord of your Life. That’s how you make Jesus the Lord of your life. Actually Jesus is the One who chooses you and then you let Him come in. (John 15:16) Continue reading

PRACTICING CHRISTIAN, PART FOUR.102415
SURRENDER to JESUS and MAKE HIM THE LORD OF YOUR LIFE (every day) In some Christian churches you can ‘get saved’ by walking down the aisle at the end of a service and declaring your allegiance (devotion) to Jesus. Maybe you fill out a card with some personal information. Then the pastor introduces you to the congregation and they vote you in on the spot and you’re saved. You’re a full member of the Body of Christ. You’re going to heaven. What more need be said? Well . . .where’s the teaching and the understanding and the commitment?
In other churches you’re baptized into the church as an infant, then when you’re around 12 you go through confirmation, with the intention that you learn the basic principles of the faith and then you make a commitment to follow Jesus, with baptism by the clergy, and hopefully of the Holy Spirit.
Clearly either of these systems is dependent on concerted effort by the church community to teach the Bible, to demonstrate the fundamentals of the faith, to show ’em what it feels like to have a personal relationship with the Living God. It requires all of us having a consistent commitment to Jesus and to our brothers and sisters in the Body. Continue reading
PRACTICING CHRISTIAN, PART THREE.102215
In the most recent post on this subject, I discussed that ‘practicing’ Christians follow certain fundamentals in their lives, the way baseball players follow certain fundamentals in playing baseball, and 1] is FOCUS ON GOD EVERY DAY. I said something like, “Give Him some time and attention”.
Just this week I’ve been reminded that there are a lot of distractions in the world that keep us from (or impede our progress in) building this kind of relationship with Jesus. I’m talking A LOT of distractions. Some of them large and threatening, others apparently small and insignificant, but just as distracting. Many of these are serious problems that require a great deal of time and attention, particularly in the eyes of well-meaning, God-fearing, Bible-believing people. Things such as the state of our nation; the many astounding changes in our culture regarding sex, marriage, constitutional issues, leadership problems, immigration, liberal vs conservative disputes, and others too numerous to mention. There are many, many things wrong, and someone just MUST do something about them. All are legitimate concerns that require attention.
On the next level are all the things that we have to do TODAY! Depending on what stage of life you’re at right now, Continue reading
NEED HELP? 072015
When I was about 50, I figured out God wants me to ‘make disciples’ for Jesus. What does it mean, ‘make disciples’? It means two things: [1] tell people what they need to do to have a personal relationship with God, and [2] teach them what they need to do to grow and develop as followers (disciples) of Jesus. I’m 66 now, and I’m starting to get number ‘2’ down. I’m really learning to teach people to “observe all things [Jesus] has commanded us.” Matthew 28:19-20. Sometimes we have a real ‘victory in Jesus’ in that area. PTL!
But I still struggle with number ‘1’. I never quite know what to say to start a conversation about God. Most of the time I ask questions like ‘Where are you from?’ or ‘What do you like to do?’ Pretty soon you stumble on something you have in common. Continue reading
THE UNDERLYING TRUTH.053115
My friend Red Smith, serving a 25 year sentence, sent me a letter one day, and it began with this line, “I thank God every day that he delivered me from myself.” That’s all I remember, but it’s enough. That leads me down several paths, but the one for today is what is really going on in God’s plan to deliver us from ourselves and all the other evil that is lurking out there.
The truth is this: that God sent his Son to save us: and the way He chose to save us is by changing us from the inside out. He saves by delivering us from the evil that is in our heart. The war between the flesh and the Spirit, between Satan and God, between God’s will and my will, is one that is going on in my heart. When God sends His Spirit to move in our lives, He doesn’t change our circumstances to affect our world, He changes our hearts so we see things differently. When we are changed inside, that changes what happens to us on the outside. Oh, God uses all kinds of things in the world to get my our attention, but his main purpose is to have us surrender our hearts to Him so that we can begin to see His eternal design for our lives. A good example is the Prodigal Son, it says, “When he came to himself, he said, ‘I will return to my father.’ ” It was because his heart was changed.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW? 052115
[This is an excerpt from a Kairos Talk: Tomorrow]
Can we be changed? Yes, but not by ourselves. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” To be changed, we must accept the gift of God. We must realize how badly we need Him, and then give our whole selves to Him, and trust Him to take care of us, because we finally figured out we can’t take care of ourselves.
The guys at your family table are your brothers. Christ’s challenge to you is to take care of them. To stick up for them. To meet regularly with them for prayer and share group. Continue reading
THE BIG ‘S’ and the little ‘s’. 051505
[This is an excerpt from the Kairos talk ‘A Christian’]
I want to tell you a little something about sin. There’s two kinds of sin; there’s the Big ‘S’, and the little ‘s’. The little ‘s’ is all the things we usually think of as sins, like lying, cheating and stealing, and sleeping with your neighbor’s wife; even murder, falls under this category. While murder is a big sin, it’s on a completely different level from the Big “S”. The Big S is Sin with a capital “S”.
The Big S is the letter that begins the word Self. Seems like Self is the biggest obstacle standing between us and God. The Big S is also the first letter of Satan. I hate to capitalize Satan’s name, but it’s his name. Let me tell you what happened to Satan. He was one of God’s favorite angels, he was called Lucifer, the angel of light. Our Hispanic brothers know La Luz is the light, and that was Satan’s name. Continue reading
WHAT? A CHRISTIAN? WHO IS THAT? 051315
[The following is an excerpt from the Kairos Talk: A Christian]
When we follow Jesus, we learn to love, because Jesus is in our hearts. We begin to see with Jesus’ eyes, and hear with Jesus’ ears, and feel with Jesus’ heart. We’re not struggling to love others, to love ourselves and to love God, because Jesus’ Spirit is inside our hearts loving others through us.
So how in the world do we reach the point of having Jesus live His eternal life in us? We have to give up. We have to quit trying to do good and do right and never make mistakes. If you finally get that message, that you can’t do it on your own, you can’t do it in your own power, you cannot possibly be good enough to satisfy God, and you accept the gift of Jesus’ death on the cross, and surrender yourself to Him, THEN you can start the journey of following Jesus.
Here’s the central message of this talk. We’re all a bunch of pieces of manure. We stink. And what’s worse, we’re not getting any better. It’s not hard to see that without God we’re not going to make it out of here alive. And I don’t mean this prison. I mean this life, my life, your life, in this world. The only way we’re going to make it is if we humble ourselves and accept Jesus as our Savior, and start letting Jesus live His life in us.
A CHRISTIAN: 051215
This is the first part of the Kairos talk, A CHRISTIAN: I call it “How to Quit Struggling and Start Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk.” Luke 9:23-24, says, “If anyone would be My disciple, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Just so you’ll know; the word disciple means follower. So if you want to be a follower of Jesus, what do you have to do? Three things: 1] Deny yourself, 2] Take up your cross daily, and 3] Follow Jesus. Continue reading
OBSTACLES TO GOD’S GRACE: 051115:
‘Obstacles’ is the next to the last talk on the Kairos Weekend Program in the prisons. “We’ve been talking all weekend about God’s plan for our lives. Let me tell you what His plan is for us; to surrender ourselves to Him. To do whatever He wants us to on a minute by minute basis. To accept the gift of His grace and share it with others. Pretty simple; but it’s not easy.
What is Grace? It is unmerited favor. That means God being nice to us when we didn’t deserve it. Grace is a lot like mercy, Mercy is God being nice to us when we deserved to be punished. Continue reading
