Matthew 10:16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as snakes and harmless [innocent and gentle] as doves.” In this passage, Jesus is talking to his twelve disciples. He tells them they will suffer persecution, but the reason they’re going is to be a testimony [for Jesus], particularly in the councils and the synagogues, before governors and kings. Some versions say “to be a testimony against them.” This is the beginning of the apostles “going out to preach the Gospel.” (At first it’s only to the people of Israel; but later, unto all the world.)
Some people think this was just for the apostles, or just for the Christians in the First Century. But I always think this passage is applicable to us, the Christians who are alive on the earth today. It is especially evident when you think of all the Christians in Asia and elsewhere, who are under persecution from Muslim, Communist and other totalitarian regimes. We really are like sheep among wolves; and we really must be as clever as snakes, and as gentle as doves, just in order to survive and continue to be witnesses for our Lord Jesus. Continue reading

What Do You Mean, PRACTICING Christian? 101715
Back on August 16, 2015, I wrote a post called “Making Disciples”. The last paragraph said, “Did you notice that I haven’t said anything about talking to these ‘friends’ about Jesus. After you develop a relationship with them, if you’re a practicing Christian, Jesus will just start flowing through you to them, and touching their hearts, whether you are trying to make disciples of them or not. ‘Course that brings up the question of what does ‘practicing’ mean? But that’s a question for another day.”
Well today is the day to discuss some of what ‘practicing’ means. Let’s see, you know practicing, as in ‘practicing’ attorney? I happen to be an attorney, and that’s a scary thought. When are they going to finish practicing and start ‘being’ one? Or practicing medicine. What’s the time line for rising to the level of actually DOING it? In those cases, sounds like practicing may be a cover for seldom knowing for sure what is exactly the right thing to do. Try something and see if it works. If not, try something else.
Practicing Christian shall be deemed to be “one who is a follower of Jesus”. Follower in the Bible is often translated disciple, or ‘one who is taught’ (student). Continue reading
THE WORD GOD HAS PLANTED.071615
“So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” NLT
Most of my life, in fact until this very morning, I have read this passage from James 1, verses 21-27, and I’ve focused on 22-25, where it talks about being doers of the Word and not hearers only, about how if you don’t do what the Word says, you’re like a man who looks at himself in the mirror and as soon as he turns away, he forgets what he looked like. Almost exactly the same guy that Jesus talked about when he said, “A man who hears My Words and does what I say is a wise man, who built his house on a rock, but a man who hears My Words and doesn’t do them is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. He’s a fool! Matt. 7:24-27.
But today, I really saw and paid attention to verse 21 for the very first time, and God said, “The word God has planted in your hearts” is the real meat of this passage. Continue reading
SILLY GAMES, GOD and MY EGO.070815
Nowadays, if you want to spend time with your kids, many dads play video games. It’s fun, even if the kids beat you. Not so long ago, before the days of I-phones, on a rainy or snowy day, dads and kids would play table games. Checkers, chess, cards, spoons, dominoes, maybe even Monopoly. We used to play Scrabble. In good weather, when it wasn’t too hot or cold, we’d get outside and play horseshoes, or a pick-up game of baseball or touch football. Oh, and ping-pong. We used to stand in the garage and play ping-pong til the wee hours. All fun, light-hearted entertainment. I don’t know about you, but some of the best times of my life, both as a kid and as a dad, were spent playing silly games with my dad or my kids.
Two observations: 1 The games weren’t just silly, often they were serious; and 2 There was a lot more going on there than fun, light-hearted entertainment. Continue reading
THE UNDERLYING TRUTH.053115
My friend Red Smith, serving a 25 year sentence, sent me a letter one day, and it began with this line, “I thank God every day that he delivered me from myself.” That’s all I remember, but it’s enough. That leads me down several paths, but the one for today is what is really going on in God’s plan to deliver us from ourselves and all the other evil that is lurking out there.
The truth is this: that God sent his Son to save us: and the way He chose to save us is by changing us from the inside out. He saves by delivering us from the evil that is in our heart. The war between the flesh and the Spirit, between Satan and God, between God’s will and my will, is one that is going on in my heart. When God sends His Spirit to move in our lives, He doesn’t change our circumstances to affect our world, He changes our hearts so we see things differently. When we are changed inside, that changes what happens to us on the outside. Oh, God uses all kinds of things in the world to get my our attention, but his main purpose is to have us surrender our hearts to Him so that we can begin to see His eternal design for our lives. A good example is the Prodigal Son, it says, “When he came to himself, he said, ‘I will return to my father.’ ” It was because his heart was changed.
DON’T BE AFRAID, JUST TRUST ME.052515
Mark 5:22-24 says, “And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. . . some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” Continue reading
WHAT HAPPENS NOW? 052115
[This is an excerpt from a Kairos Talk: Tomorrow]
Can we be changed? Yes, but not by ourselves. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” To be changed, we must accept the gift of God. We must realize how badly we need Him, and then give our whole selves to Him, and trust Him to take care of us, because we finally figured out we can’t take care of ourselves.
The guys at your family table are your brothers. Christ’s challenge to you is to take care of them. To stick up for them. To meet regularly with them for prayer and share group. Continue reading
TOMORROW [a Kairos Talk].051915
[This is an excerpt from a talk on a Kairos Weekend in a prison]
On this final day we need to look back to where we were on Thursday, and then look at where we are today. Might say we’ve come a long way. Think back to the first day and the first talk “Choices”. We said the choices we make effect where we end up in life. What do we mean when we say life is a journey? We’re not really talking about going from one place to another on the earth. We’re talking about in our hearts.
About being in a new place inside. 1] About realizing we’re different, something has happened, something has changed. 2] Feeling different about others. 3] Finding new experiences and new relationships. 4] What are some new things you have experienced these last 3 days? Continue reading
THE BIG ‘S’ and the little ‘s’. 051505
[This is an excerpt from the Kairos talk ‘A Christian’]
I want to tell you a little something about sin. There’s two kinds of sin; there’s the Big ‘S’, and the little ‘s’. The little ‘s’ is all the things we usually think of as sins, like lying, cheating and stealing, and sleeping with your neighbor’s wife; even murder, falls under this category. While murder is a big sin, it’s on a completely different level from the Big “S”. The Big S is Sin with a capital “S”.
The Big S is the letter that begins the word Self. Seems like Self is the biggest obstacle standing between us and God. The Big S is also the first letter of Satan. I hate to capitalize Satan’s name, but it’s his name. Let me tell you what happened to Satan. He was one of God’s favorite angels, he was called Lucifer, the angel of light. Our Hispanic brothers know La Luz is the light, and that was Satan’s name. Continue reading
Kairos-A Christian.051415
[This is an excerpt from the Kairos talk “A Christian”]
LOVE is about mercy and forgiveness; Mercy is being nice to someone (cuttin’ them a little slack) even when they deserve to be punished. That’s what God does for us.
Forgiveness is what love is in practice. It’s what happens when we love people enough to forgive them, even when they are wrong and we’re right; even when no one is looking and it won’t help us a bit. Forgiveness is the evidence of mercy in our individual personal relationships.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4, it says ‘Love is patient.’ In the King James version of the Bible, and in the original Greek the verse says, “Love suffers long.” That means if you really love someone, you put up with them. I’m thinking about my kids when they were teenagers. It means that you put up with them, even though you’ve told them 15 times what you expect, and they’re still doing it wrong, very likely on purpose and not accidentally. That’s what it means when it says love suffers long. Continue reading
